When Something Still Feels Missing: The Often Overlooked Side of Sport

You can train hard, eat well, stay consistent… and still feel like something’s missing.

It’s often said that sport is 90% mental…

But how often is that part really given space?

So much time and energy goes into training the body.
Pushing limits. Hitting targets. Staying strong.
But the mental side? It’s often left quiet… until it’s not.

What we see (in conversations, in research, in the lived experience of athletes) is that mental wellbeing has a very real impact on performance.

Athletes who feel mentally supported tend to respond differently to pressure. For example:
– recovering quicker
– focusing longer
– adjusting faster when things don’t go to plan.

That means:

✅ Less burnout.
✅ More stable motivation.
✅ Better sleep and recovery.
✅ Fewer injuries linked to overtraining or overwhelm.

And maybe most importantly: setbacks don’t undo them the way they used to.

But just like anything else in sport, it’s about balance.

Too much focus on performance without room for mental care? Burnout follows.

Too much emphasis on wellbeing without challenge or structure? That can flatten performance too.

The aim isn’t to choose between care and competitiveness, it’s to understand how deeply they’re connected.

Because the truth is:
Mental wellbeing isn’t a nice-to-have.
It’s not a break from performance.
It’s part of it.
